Islamabad for me has always ranked at the top in my own personal Ranking of cities to live in and a place like this which is often seen as only a serene and structured city or some would even refer to it as a soulless or Boring place has way more to offer than only well-planned roads and government buildings and I believe there lies a world of adventure waiting to be explored. So, if you’re looking for an experience that takes you off the beaten path, this itinerary of hidden gems in the capital will show you a side of Islamabad you never expected.

Trail 3 – A Hiking Adventure Like No Other

Trail 3 is one of the longest and most popular hiking trails in the Margalla Hills, offering a unique experience every time you visit. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a beginner, this trail has something for everyone. There are essentially two routes to choose from: the Fire Trail and the Normal Hiking Trail. The Fire Trail is a steep, direct route that’s quicker but more challenging, making it ideal for experienced hikers. It’s not recommended for beginners due to its exhausting climbs. On the other hand, the Normal Hiking Trail is a zigzagging path that’s much easier and suitable for all ages, with only a few steep sections. Both trails are surrounded by lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and the occasional sighting of monkeys and other small, harmless animals. The soothing environment, fresh air, and the sounds of nature make it a refreshing escape from the city. One of the most exciting aspects of Trail 3 is that every hike feels like a new adventure. You might discover small shortcuts or hidden spots along the way, adding an element of surprise to your journey. However, it’s important to come prepared, as there are no proper shops or cafes on the trail. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and maybe even a juice bottle to stay hydrated but don’t try to add those tasteless ORS Sachets in your water or it may ruin your whole hike. Occasionally, you’ll even find hawkers selling drinks, biscuits, and snacks, but it’s best not to rely on them. The trail ends at Monal, a popular spot for hikers to relax and enjoy a meal. While the original Monal Restaurant is now permanently closed, there is this Wild Wadi Restaurant at a 5 min walk from where the trail ends, and they do offer some good food along with stunning views. After refuelling, you can either take a taxi back to the parking area or, if you’re feeling adventurous, hike back down—though the latter is not recommended after a heavy meal!

Pro Tip: If you’re hiking in the summer, be cautious. The heat and humidity can lead to excessive sweating and dehydration. I learned this the hard way during a hike in extreme humidity, which made the experience far more exhausting than enjoyable. The best time to visit is during the winter months when the weather is cool, and you can fully enjoy the hike without feeling drained.

Saidpur Village – Where Time Stands Still

Tucked away in the Margalla Hills, Saidpur Village is a 500-year-old gem that has been remodelled into a cultural and heritage site. While most visitors come for its charming cafés and picturesque streets, a deeper exploration reveals Hindu temples, a Sikh Gurdwara, and a Sufi tomb, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of cultures and as you keep moving forward towards the hills you get a glimpse of the local lifestyle. You can watch live pottery demonstrations, visit the museum, and take-home handmade souvenirs from the gift shops. The village’s terraced mud houses and serene ambiance make it a must-visit for history buffs and culture enthusiasts alike.

Neelan Bhotu Village – A Natural Oasis

If you’re looking for an escape into untouched nature, Neelan Bhotu Village is a must-visit. Located in the Margalla Hills, this hidden paradise is approximately 25 km long and 10 km wide, offering stunning views of the Murree hills on clear days. A fresh, clear water stream runs alongside the track, eventually forming natural pools perfect for swimming and we once even made some BBQ near that but Of course! Ask the locals first. The area is also home to the Chilla Gah of Hazrat Bari Imam, where crystal-clear water ponds are filled with colorful masheer fish. Fishing is strictly prohibited here, adding to the area’s untouched beauty. With its mountains, treelines, open spaces, and opportunities for off-roading and hiking, Neelan Bhotu is a natural wonderland waiting to be explored.

Shrine of Bari Imam & Majeed Huts – Spirituality and Solitude

The Shrine of Bari Imam, Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Kazmi, is a spiritual landmark that attracts devotees from across the country. The saint, who spread the message of Islam in the 1600s, is revered for his teachings of love, peace, and harmony. The shrine, originally built by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, is a hub of activity, with devotees offering prayers, leaving votive offerings, and even dancing to the chants of “Ya Ali Madad.” Nearby, the Chilla Gah (Loh e Dandi) in the Margalla Hills is where Bari Imam spent 40 days in prayer, adding a layer of spiritual significance to the area. After exploring the shrine, head to Majeed Huts, a legendary roadside dhaba opposite Quaid-e-Azam University. Known for its mouthwatering chicken malai, kebab fry, and the famous “Crisis Omelet,” this humble eatery has become an institution in itself. The “Crisis Omelet” was born out of necessity when latecomers would find only scraps of food left, which were then stir-fried into an omelet. Today, it’s a must-try dish that unites students and visitors alike. Majeed Huts is open for lunch and often sells out by 4 pm, so arrive early to secure a spot!

Bruti Waterfall – Islamabad’s Best-Kept Secret

Tucked deep in the Margalla Hills, Bruti Waterfall is a hidden gem that offers a refreshing escape from the city. The waterfall is famous for its hygienic freshwater ponds, making it an ideal spot for swimming during the summer months. The area is also tied to the spiritual heritage of Bari Imam. A short 15–20 minute hike from the parking area will lead you to the waterfall, where the sound of cascading water and the cool mist create a serene atmosphere. Be cautious during the monsoon season, as the rocks can get slippery.

Shah Allah Ditta Caves – A Journey Through Time

For history enthusiasts, the Shah Allah Ditta Caves are a must-visit. Located near the Margalla Expressway, these ancient caves are believed to be 2,000 to 3,000 years old, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich past. While they may not be as expansive as the Lorey Caverns, their historical significance and scenic surroundings make them a unique destination. The caves are nestled among weathered rocky hills and ancient trees, with a small stream flowing beneath them, creating a serene and almost mystical atmosphere. Monkeys can often be seen jumping through the trees, adding to the area’s charm—though it’s best to keep a safe distance from them. The site is perfect for a half-day outing with family or friends. A nearby restaurant offers food, archery, and horse riding. For the adventurous, a 2 km hike uphill leads to a Buddhist stupa, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Kiosks near the caves serve fries, pakoras, and tea, perfect for a quick snack, while makeshift swings provide entertainment for kids.

Pro Tip: Visit early in the morning or during winter when the sun is out to avoid crowds and fully appreciate the site’s natural beauty. Don’t forget your camera to capture the breathtaking views and ancient ambiance.

Haunted Hill Park – A Spooky Yet Scenic Adventure

For those who love a mix of mystery and thrill, Haunted Hill Park offers a unique experience. This eerie yet fascinating spot is rumored to be haunted, with local legends speaking of a “Lady in White” who wanders the hill at night. Visitors have reported hearing whispers, cries, and unexplained footsteps, adding to the area’s mystique. Despite its spooky reputation, the hill park is quite stunning, especially at sunset. Whether you’re there for the ghost stories or maybe Myth Busting, it’s an unconventional adventure you won’t forget.

Conclusion

Islamabad is full of surprises for those willing to step off the main roads and explore. From hidden waterfalls and historic villages to spiritual retreats and spooky adventures, the city offers more than meets the eye. Whether you're an adventure enthusiast, a history buff, or just someone looking for a new experience, these unexpected gems will show you a different side of Islamabad—one that’s thrilling, refreshing, and truly unforgettable.
