Located in Peshawar's main Saddar Bazaar, the majestic Sunehri Masjid is known for its considerable size, built over an impressive 1,670 square metres — and its Mughal-style architecture. It is one of the most iconic mosques in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the capital province of northwestern Pakistan.

Construction on the Sunehri Masjid, not to be confused with the mosque of the same name near Delhi Gate in Lahore; started just before the creation of Pakistan and attracts a large number of visitors, especially during the month of Ramadan.

The foundation stone of the mosque was laid by Habib Ur Rehman, a Peshawar resident, in 1946. However, construction was hit by delays due to unavailability of funds and security issues, and was completed in 1992, primarily funded by public donations.

Rehman modeled the mosque after Lahore's iconic Badshahi Mosque, built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. As the prayer leader at Sunehri Masjid, Maulana Muhammad Ismail, explained: "The foundation stone of our mosque was laid in 1946, but the situation deteriorated in Pakistan due to the wars of 1965 and 1971, so work was stopped for a little time."

Peshawar's Sunehri Masjid reflects a community effort across decades. Its construction began in 1942 but due to funding interruptions was not completed until 1992, symbolizing perseverance and collective faith. The mosque stands today as a testament to the determination of Peshawar's residents to create a grand place of worship for generations to come.

The central minaret; a hallmark of the mosque was built at 39 metres (128 feet) so it could be seen from far-flung areas in Peshawar at a time when there were few tall buildings in the city.

The entrance of the mosque and its architecture are closely inspired by the Shahi Masjid of Lahore. Above the red bricks rise arches, domes, and pointed finials; a striking skyline presence in central Peshawar.

The mosque is two storeys with a total area of 18,000 square feet. About 6,000 worshippers can pray at one time. Notably, the mosque also has a dedicated space for women where they offer Eid prayers and listen to Friday sermons.

Sunehri Masjid is located in Peshawar's main Saddar Bazaar, in the Sarwar Gunj Colony area on Sunehri Masjid Road, Peshawar Cantonment. It is easily reachable from the city centre by rickshaw or taxi.
